About Legacy Pilates, Yoga and More

Cindy Cook is the founder of Vital Lifestyles, Inc., Pilates Lakeside, Pilates Lifestyle, and Legacy Pilates, Yoga and More. She has 20 years experience in the fitness and wellness industry. Cindy has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Exercise Science minor from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her Certifications include American College of Sports Medicine HFI, American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, COREFIT Pilates, PilatesCoach mat & small equipment and Reformer, Pilates Unlimited LLC Mat & Equipment, Tai chi (FlowMotion), YogaFit, PiYo, Hatha Yoga and Reiki.

All of our instructors are educated in their field of expertise and continue to enhance their education and skills by attending workshops and classes in health, wellness and related fields.

Our focus is on instilling balance in our lives. Western exercise generally beats the body up. In mind-body practices, one learns to challenge the body without forcing, straining or pushing to get results. Learning to go deeper into the core, stabilizing muscles of the body is a totally different feeling than using the larger, more superficial muscles. A sense of internal strength and power blended with a graceful approach will offer great mind and body control. This kind of control affects all aspects of life and can benefit any sport or activity.

Our primary programs consist of Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi. These practices are very time-efficient. They blend muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular and respiratory components to create a well-rounded fitness program and great health benefits. Focus, coordination, stability, rotation, power, and stress management are just some of the benefits you will encounter with these methods of exercise. Learning to let go of the "no pain, no gain" philosophy and feeling "no pain, no strain" will be a tremendous difference in the effects in the mind and body. The benefits one gets through these types of programs is astounding.

We hope you can join us for one of our life-transforming, powerful, yet calming, programs. Let us know how we can help you reach your health goals.

Om Shanti (peace),

Cindy Cook

WHAT’S THE SCOOP ABOUT MIND-BODY PROGRAMS?

All mind body programs are designed to balance the human mind, body, emotions and spirit.  They are all wonderful practices. There is not one format better than another. This is a personal preference as to what you click and stick with. Follow your intuition, feel what each program does for you and YOU determine what is the best program for you. Years ago, research would point to a type of cardio piece of equipment (let’s say a ski machine) as the “best calorie burning exercise”.  If one is not an avid skier, then this is actually not the case as the body is inefficient in doing the work.  One  may fall off the wagon (if not off the machine) after a short period of time because it’s boring, cumbersome or doesn’t bring results.  Then 2 years later, something else hits the market and it’s the “best”.  Mind body disciplines have been around for thousands of years so they have the history, experience and trial-error factors to back them up. They are not foo-foo, woo-woo programs. They are sciences in their own rite as they have been practiced, perfected and passed on from master teacher to student. They have worked out the kinks and found things that work! Mind body programs are not just a bandaids, but something that can bring lasting results if practiced as taught traditionally and not just as “exercise”.  Modern exercise is typically thoughtless.  Watch TV, listen to music or talk to someone during the workout just to get through it with less pain or to pass the time more quickly.  What fun is that?  Why choose to do something that is not exhilarating, brings huge amounts of joy and peace and gives more energy (versus pain, aches and misery).  Modern science is starting to catch up with the ancient wisdom of these awesome practices. Even so, just because we can’t prove something, doesn’t make it any less potent. There are things that cannot be seen nor proven. It’s a trust and feeling thing. So….join us for some programs and feel just how powerful this stuff is!

    PILATES EQUIPMENT CLASSES

Joseph Pilates designed his equipment to help enhance certain body connections, reduce imbalances and improve strength and flexibility. His health recommendations were to do his advanced protocol 4 days a week, walk and use a good, stiff brush to get rid of dead cells and stimulate the skin. There are millions of websites out there that you can search the history of the man and his program. Originally called Contrology (controlling the body with the mind), Joseph created an awesome protocol for balancing the body.

We have all of the major pilates’ equipment made (Trapeze/Tower, Chair, Spine Corrector, Reformer and more), not just the reformer, which offers variety and cross-training to catch on to the essence of the work better than just using one piece of equipment.  This class is like yoga on a weight machine. The pilates equipment is fun, challenging, new and exciting! Classes are offered based on skill, physical limitations and experience level including beginner to advanced programs.  A 3-hour Foundations Workshop is required before taking a Pilates Equipment Class.

We use and recommend Pilates equipment by Balanced Body which is one of the longest standing manufacturers of pilates equipment available! Check them out at http://www.pilates.com.

PILATES FLOOR/MAT CLASSES

Joseph Pilates developed a series of exercises to be done on the floor or “mat”.  Challenge the core, strengthen and lengthen the body, improve balance, enhance physical well-being with these powerful, effective exercises. Joseph studied many body strengthening programs that include moving the spine in all aspects of its capabilities. This balanced workout creates a beautiful, lean, efficient body; a clear, focused mind; and a lively spirit. Our class sizes are small so we can give you more individual instruction to help you reach your goals!

YOGA CLASSES

Yoga is an ancient discipline designed to enhance the well-being of the human body, mind and spirit. Yoga is not just a physical discipline, but a total health program. Learn more than just stretches and exercises. Typically in the west we have been taught in many aspects of our lives to push and drive ourselves to reach goals. In yoga, one just “notices what you notice” and are in the present moment, working the body and mind in a gentle manner. The “no pain, no gain” philosophy absolutely does not apply here. In the ancient texts, yoga asana (physical exercises) are to be easy and comfortable. Nothing is said about eye balls popping out and being sore the next day. That doesn’t mean one can’t get stronger, leaner and more flexible with a yoga practice. Progression and overload in exercise science do apply since the body and mind DO gain benefits from repetition, practice, persistence and perseverance. In yoga though, we do so with a gentle, completely aware, perspective. We do not beat the body up, push the body into positions, work to the point of the “burn” nor get out of breath. Yoga helps one to feel so good you won’t want to go home (we do have blankets and pillows if you would like to stay J).  There are many different styles of yoga. Various styles of yoga are suitable for different personalities, injuries, goals and fitness experience. Therapeutic and gentle yoga for the beginners, people with physical limitations or just want to relax and stretch. Power, hot, Bikram, Ashtanga and other vinyasa or flow style classes can be more powerful for those with experience and can move with more vigor. Based on your mind-body type (workshops at our studio can teach you more about that) what you are attracted to may not be what you need for BALANCE. For example, if you are hyper, have ADHD/ADD, anxiety and other neurological types of issues, fast-paced, power yoga types of classes may not be the best to bring balance to the nervous system. Someone who is very lethargic, obese and/or depressed may need a little more stimulation with a more fluid, flowing type workout. So….learn more about yourself so you can help yourself! Yoga is a great place to start!!

TAI CHI CLASSES

Tai Chi is another ancient series of beautiful, flowing movements to balance the mind, body, emotions and spirit.  This program is designed to lubricate the body and focus the mind, moving chi or energy through the body.  The essence is to free up blockages in the mind and body to create a fluid, rhythmic, flow in life. Improve balance, enhance energy and improve flexibility in these gentle, yet powerful classes. This is not just for old people. Tai Chi brings great qualities of peace and balance that are indescribable.

“I started in my 30’s and was astounded at how little balance and internal control I had and I was an athlete, personal trainer and group fitness instructor!  Amazing!”

--Cindy Cook

KIDS PROGRAMS

Focus, improved fitness and a sense of calmness are bound to improve your child's self-esteem while teaching them great techniques to help throughout their life. Children learn self-control and other life enhancing strategies to overcome the stresses facing us today. They typically learn much quicker than adults since they do not have the mental and physical blockages that are picked up during life experiences, peer pressure, trauma and other events.

    TESTIMONIALS

“I am an active person and love the outdoors; I like to bike and walk whenever I can.  Yoga really complements the cardio exercise with the poses and the stretching and using muscles (ie upper body) that I usually don't use.  Sometimes I have pain in my upper and lower back because of slight scoliosis.  I have one hip higher than the other and one leg longer than the other and one shoulder blade that sticks out more.  So, for example, when I do too much yard work or try to carry too much, I hurt.  But the slow stretching and deep breathing of yoga and the Pilates floor exercises always help me work out those issues.  I have been to a few other yoga classes at the YMCA and another studio in town.  I really like the instructors at Legacy Pilates, Yoga & More.  There is a non-competitive, helpful atmosphere and they really know the physiology of movement.  I like to be made aware of what muscle groups are used and what is the proper form.”

–Sandy L.

“Looking forward to another class as Jim is really getting hooked on the PiYo....best investment we've made in ourselves in a long time.”  –Karla F

"I have been attending the Legacy Pilates and Yoga studio for almost 1 1/2 years.  With their help I have seen results beyond my wildest dreams (and unlike anything I could achieve after MANY hours of running and other classes at various mainstream gyms).   Cindy, Aileen and all the instructors I have had at the studio are fantastic on both the pilates equipment and floor classes.  If you want instructors who pay attention to the details of your form and practice this is the studio for you.  I have yet to attend a class that my instructor did not PERSONALLY assist me in achieving a deeper connection and proper form.  Classes are small, 2- 6 individuals, which allows for this kind of one-on-one attention.  It is personal training without breaking the bank.  I have been to both yoga and pilates at other mainstream gyms and could never achieve the kind of results I have seen with Cindy and her group.  Certainly I have never received the personal attention without paying for my own personal trainer at over twice the cost!  And the best testimony yet, they have kids yoga class and have inspired my 6 year old daughter to crave weekly yoga practice!  Thanks everyone at Legacy Yoga and Pilates for providing Omaha with an excellent studio for a balanced mind-body practice that really gets results!"

–Robyn L.

About Joseph H. Pilates

Pronounced "puh-la-tes", this form of exercise was developed by Joseph H. Pilates. Even though most people think Pilates is a new fitness program, Joseph was born in 1880. He was a frail, sickly child who improved his physical health with concentrated exercises. He was an exercise enthusiast, gymnast and boxer who designed a rehabilitation program in Europe and immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. Joseph opened his studio in New York next to a dance studio (probably why many think pilates is for dancers). He called his method "Contrology" or controlling the body with the mind. Some of his long-term students have opened "Pilates" studios and continued his legend by offering programs and training in the Pilates method. Check www.pilates.com for more history about Joseph Pilates.
